Afraid, Fearful, Scared & Worried - The Culture We Minister To

Last Sunday Wayne Jenkins, the associational missionary of the Western Baptist Association in Newnan, preached First Baptist Church of Moreland's Homecoming. Wayne talked about the people we minister to today. In 2008, our country experienced a recession - income, jobs and real estate vanished. Wayne talked about how the recession changed everyone. Job security, stocks, and hope for a bright financial future dried up. All of a sudden there's a pessimistic attitude about future success. Teenagers and college students don't plan to become millionaires.

How do Christians minister to an afraid, fearful, scared and worried generation? Believers are able to distinguish themselves during fearful times. Our strength and hope in the Lord sets us apart. Praying with and for people whom are struggling - helping the man who received a pink slip last week, he now needs a reference this week - and encouraging the college grad with a mountain of debt and no job prospects. We offer Christ to everyone down and out from the recession.

  • The afraid wife for her husband's job - Christ gives peace.
  • The fearful teen with crushed dreams - Christ restores hope.
  • The scared banker who studies interest rates - Christ provides a future.
  • The worried worker who watching the company cut back - Christ is victorious.

The Romans Road to Salvation

Last Sunday I preached on the Romans Road to Salvation. This is a series of Bibles verses that clearly share the sinfulness of man, the provision made by God and the response of man for salvation. The Romans Road to Salvation are five Bible verses to show someone how to be saved.
  • Romans 3:23
  • Romans 6:23
  • Romans 5:8
  • Romans 10:9
  • Romans 10:13
Every believer should be able to tell an unsaved person how to be saved. It's hard to live as a Great Commission Christian when you're silent about Christ.

Telling someone about Christ is the most important conversation you could ever have. Have you memorized the Romans Road or another Gospel Presentation? Another one I use, especially with children, are the ABC's of becoming a Christian.
  • Admit - Romans 3:23
  • Believe - John 3:16
  • Confess - Romans 10:9
From my experience, once a Christian has memorized or learned a Gospel Presentation, God will bring people in their path to share it with. Here's some other resources/presentations to sharing the Gospel. Always remember, all you really need is your Bible - there's power in people reading and hearing Scripture.

Tattletales (from Sherri)

Parents with school age children know all too well about tattling. It is a constant battle at our house. “Mom, sister pushed me.” “Mom, brother won’t quit playing with my toys.” My children even tattle on my husband, telling me that he let them have candy while I was away from the house! Every second is accounted for and if necessary tattled on. Yesterday I was so tired of hearing about other people’s problems I just plugged my ears! Children are always so concerned about others, when they really just need to focus on themselves.

But wait, don’t we as Christians have the same problem? How often have I gone before God and complained because I didn’t feel I was being treated fair. I am just like my children! I run to God and tell Him about other people’s problems. I have so many improvements I need to make on myself I shouldn’t be concerned about someone else’s spiritual walk with God.

"Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners-of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life." (1 Timothy 1: 15-16) I am so thankful that God has “unlimited patience” with me. My prayer today is that I will try to be more like God so that my children see Jesus’ love in me. Instead of plugging my ears, I will listen, and I will teach.  Lord help me to love like You.
